Gas Price Drumbeat: An out-of-town rip-off

A BOUQUET TO LOCAL FULL SERVICE STATIONS: Driver, used to dealing with honest full-service stations in Columbia, KY, is shocked when the cost of gas was over $1.00 higher when an attendant pumped in a nearby town
About: What is going on?

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

Today, I was in (another town) and gas was $1.65. I thought I would fill up since I was there. I pulled into the (station). They had the price posted 1.65 on their sign. I pulled up to the full service side and had them fill up. When he told me the amount, I questioned the posted sign. Gas was 1.65 if you pumped it yourself. I paid 2.99 since he pumped it for me. Talk about a rip-off!!!

There was nothing posted stating this difference and I was furious. I am accustomed to our full service stations here in Columbia that pump your gas for the posted price, not for over a dollar more per gallon. Lesson learned the hard way, but others should also be aware and steer clear of that station.

Holy Jack Conway!!! Another thing to worry about. It pays trusting Columbians, used to honest dealings with their neighbors, to be taken in by attendants elsewhere who are not so honest as the people we deal with in Adair County. When buying gas from dealers you don't know, it would pay to ask before they pump. And when out of Adair County, remember that when you have an attendant fill your tank, you're usually forward of the pump face. It is possible for the pump not to have been reset to $00.00 and you're paying a second time for gas already bought by another individual. Thank goodness that wouldn't happen in Adair County. Today, it ain't local folks, or local independent dealers, who are responsible for the historic price differential we've paid here over the years. -EW
