More on the trees framing the Grand View of West Fork Road

About: Grand view of West Fork Road

By Billy Joe Fudge

This picture is framed on both the left and right by Virginia Pine. Virginia Pine is often referred to as Scrub Pine. Virginia Pine is considered by most to be the only pine that is native to Adair and Cumberland Counties of Kentucky.

There are a lot of different pine growing in our area now thanks to the Kentucky Division of Forestry which sells, among others, Eastern White Pine. There are two White Pine in this picture. They are just to the left of the West Fork Road and beyond the curve. If you look closely you can see that they are a little lighter hue of green than the Eastern Red Cedar that are scattered throughout the photo.

White Pine according to most experts is the tallest species in the Eastern United States. It is native in some areas of Eastern Kentucky and I know where two are growing on a moist wooded hillside in Cumberland County that I consider to be native. One of them is easily 100 feet tall and over 40 inches in diameter.

Thanks. We'll want to get photos of those two forest giants if it is possible -CM

Scenic Cumberland Co., KY: Grand view of West Fork Rd.

2009-01-04 - Cumberland Co., KY - Photo by Pen.
A Winter's Look Down Westfork Road in Cumberland County: Just south of Adair County, just beyond the tiny Adair CR Gibson Road, a really narrow lane, the world opens up on what appears, after Gibson Road to be a parkway. Around the first of the year, it's the cedars' beauty and the curiosity about what's around that next curve down the road in the distance that draws one on through the Westfork Valley and onto Kentucky Scenic Highway 704, near Bakerton, KY. To get there: From Breeding, take Independence Road just past the Fudge Cemetery, turn right on Greenbriar Road to Gibson Road, and take Gibson Road. Gibson road widens into Westfork Road in Cumberland County.
