Letter: Uriah Thompkins, AC News & tombstone all wrong

Judge James Garnett born in 1834, relative says

About: Uriah Thompkins sends more on the funeral of Judge Garnett

Uriah Thompkins is mistaken about Judge James Garnett's birth year. I have the book written by his son, James Garnett II, Judge James Garnett 1834-1905 His Ancestors and Descendants. He gives his father's birthdate as July 8, 1834, and said he lived to be "70 years, 6 mo. and 17 days."

Mr. Thompkins, the tombstone is incorrect.

Unsigned letter from relative

Thanks. Mr. Thompkins says he got his information from the Adair County News, so he is only a very diligent historian. However, we would like to have accurate information on Judge Garnett. He is one of the truly great Adair Countians of all times. Our thanks to Mr. Saeli for the photograph of he snowy gravesite, to the relative who apprised us of the correct date, and, of course to Mr. Uriah Thompkins. Mr. Thompkins did not leave an address; the name could be a penname. Our staff linguistic analyst--no Dr. Dolittle, he--could only detect "what appears to be a distinct Russell County syntax, modified by Lindsey Wilson College, with, perhaps, some juxta-Canadian influences."--whatever that means. In any case, we hope we hear more from him from time to time. -EW
