I got to thinking bout my socks this morning and I really do believe that it's possible that I own the "World's Oldest Christmas Socks". I don't have a copy of the Guinness Book of World Records but if anyone one out there does let me know if there is a category for such a thing.

This year I finally got the chance to consult an expert on all things Christmas - Santa Claus. When I told him my story about my Christmas socks he agreed that I may be right. "I've seen quite a few stockings hung by the chimney with care over the centuries and these socks are special indeed", he said when I caught up with him at the Homemaker's Holiday Bazaar.

Of course there are a lot of old people who are going to say that they've lasted this long cos' back in their day people really knew who to make things. Truthfully I think that they've lasted cos' of Christmas magic - that and the fact that they've only been worn 35 times.

I bought these socks in 1973 at Maas Brothers Department store in Tampa, Florida. I was 19 and I had never heard of such a thing as "Christmas Socks". I was fascinated by such an innovative idea and must have been a little crazy too because I forked over $5.00 of my hard earned money for this pair. Back then I was earning $1.75 an hour so those socks represented over 3 hours of work for me.

I've worn this same pair of socks every Christmas day since then. They were there to keep me warm during the Christmas Blizzard in Colorado Springs and they were my only decoration the year I spent Christmas alone. I walked more than 5 miles in these socks the Christmas I carried cookies and cocoa to the troops in South Korea. They make me think of the red and green paper chains I made with my children when we couldn't afford fancy decorations.

It sure seemed like a huge investment back then but now when I think about where those socks have taken me - well I got a good deal.
