The Epicurean Kentuckian: Orange Slice Cookies

A great Southern treat/ Remember how orange gum slices were your grandfather's favorite candy. He might not rate orange slice cookies any higher than bagged slices of the old-timey confection, but we're sure he'd approve of using some of them to make this delicious holiday treat. Great to leave with a hot cup of coffee for a Christmas Eve, Santa visit.

Old store at Cundiff, Melson Ridge, District 3, Adair Co., KY

2008-12-09 - Southern Adair County - Photo by Ed Waggener.
IT'S NOT GOOD WHEN A COMMUNITY DOESN'T HAVE A COUNTRY STORE. Cundiff, KY, once had three stores. The last of the three was this one Miller's Store. It's for sale now. Murrell Burton has it listed. The closest place for residents of the community to get sandwiches, cold drinks, and fill in groceries are at Glens Fork, Bakerton (Cumberland County), and the crossroads at Hale's Highway and KY 55 (Russell County). Local churches continue to thrive and residential development has been strong in the last few years. It takes a special person to run a country store, but there are special social rewards for those who tackle the challenge. This one needs work on the floor and the roof; it could stand some paint and some charm touches, but the big lot is relatively clean and offers some beautiful views. Murrell Burton says the price is low.
