Comment on: CU alumna, Gretchen Walker, published in science magazine

To ColumbiaMagazine.com:

The lamprey were collected from Russell Creek at White Oak Church ford (now a bridge) in Adair County. The eggs were stripped from females and fertilized in my Stream Ecology Laboratory at CU.

Once Gretchen reared the larvae, we released them at a site in lower Russell Creek near Greensburg.

We discovered the lamprey at the White Oak Site several years ago. At that time there was a very large population living there and very few (13 individuals) had been collected in the entire state. Unfortunately, the stream has deteriorated much since these early collections. I hope it will recover as this site was at one time really unique.

Thanks for your interest in Gretchen's work. She did a really good piece of work.

s/Gordon Weddle
