Letter: Wants list of those who lost lives in Hotel Fire Learned after marriage that both she, future husband were onlookers at disaster About: Photo of the Hotel Miller Fire Ed, Would anyone happen to know the names of the five people who died in this fire? I was only nine at the time. The picture has conjured up a lot of old memories for both my husband and I. It turns out that we were both there the night it burned and we were standing in almost the same location. Too bad we didn't know each other back then; of course I doubt he would have wanted anything to do with me since I was nine and he was seventeen. The night that the hotel burned I remember hearing a lot of sirens. We lived right behind the Masonic Lodge on Frazier Ave. in Columbia, so we could hear every alarm and siren. Someone came by and told us the old hotel was on fire and my grandmother, Mae Collins; my mother, Betty Cash; my brother, Phil Hudson; and I all went down to The Square to watch the commotion. This fire is one of the worst memories that I have from Columbia as a child, but I would like to thank Larry Smith (and Jimmy Cravens) for posting the picture. I found it really neat that Eldon, my husband, and I were both there that night, and although we didn't meet until 10 years later, we are able to share that memory. Thanks, s/Cindy BurtonThe information you want will be posted as soon as we know we have an accurate recalling. There are old newspapers which were published on the morning following the fire; and the next day. An eight page supplement was published while the fire was in progress by the Columbia, KY, Daily Statesman of the time, with some unforgettable photos, by several photographers; most of those used where by Mike Murrell. Another supplement was published the following day. -EWThe five fatalities in 1977 Hotel Fire listed below:The names of the five 1977 Hotel Fire victims have now been receeived ColumbiaMagazine.com, with the name of Charlie Bybee sent to us by a number of people.
