Ruff Named Lindsey Wilson College Wrestling Coach

Cory Ruff believes Lindsey Lindsey Wilson has the resources to become a NAIA wrestling power. Comes to LWC from Wisconsin-La Crosse

By Chris Wells, LWC Sports Information Director

Corey Ruff has been named the first head wrestling coach at Lindsey Wilson College, the school announced on Wednesday. Lindsey Wilson announced in early October the addition of wrestling to its athletic programs beginning fall of 2009.

Ruff served as assistant coach the last two seasons at Ellsworth Community College. He was a member of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's coaching staff from 2003-06.

"Corey did a great job in his interview and his references spoke highly of him," Lindsey Wilson athletics director Willis Pooler said. "I'm convinced Corey will take advantage of this opportunity and will work day and night to build a wrestling tradition on our campus.

"He is hungry and eager to build a program that fits our philosophy; educating and developing young people through athletic experiences in a highly competitive environment.

The wrestling team will be housed in the new health and wellness center which is scheduled for opening in the fall of 2009. There will be a 5,000 square foot area that includes a wrestling room and offices for the staff.

During his time at Ellsworth and Wisconsin-La Crosse, Ruff has helped coach four national champions, 24 All-Americans, 19 regional champions and 40 national qualifiers.

"My goal has always been to take over a new program and mold it for success," Ruff said. "This is a tremendous opportunity and I believe we can build a successful program at Lindsey Wilson."

While at Wisconsin-La Crosse, Ruff helped the team improve its national tournament finish each of the three seasons he was on staff. In 2004-05, UW-La Crosse finished as national runner-up in the NCAA Division III National Championships. At Ellsworth, Ruff helped the team to a fifth place finish in 2007-08. "There is a lot of responsibility in running a wrestling program," Ruff said. "But after meeting the administration, I know they will support our program and me as an individual every step of the way, which is vital to any athletic program's success."

One of Ruff's goals is to recruit high quality student-athletes and to use wrestling to continue to instill values such as trust and faith.

"I am looking for high-character student athletes," Ruff said. "I understand the importance of mission at Lindsey Wilson College and my goal is to meet those standards while producing on the mat."

Ruff also looks forward to working in the community and throughout Kentucky. He believes this is one of the most crucial aspects to the program's success.

"My goal is to meet with every high-school head wrestling coach in the state of Kentucky to get to know the system," Ruff said. "I also envision setting up camps for the local kids and establishing a good rapport within the community and around the region."

Before his collegiate coaching career, Ruff spent four years as the assistant coach at Arcadia High School in Wisconsin. While at Arcadia he led the strength and conditioning program and assisted in all other aspects of the team.

Ruff believes Lindsey Wilson has the resources to become a NAIA wrestling power.

"Lindsey Wilson is a growing campus with a rich tradition within its athletic department. The new health and wellness center is only going to enhance our program. I'm very exciting to be here," Ruff said.
