Fire destroys residence at 602 Grissom Street

The Columbia Fire Department responded to a residential house fire at 10:15amCT on Monday. The fire was located at 602 Grissom Street, between Tutt and Bomar Heights.

Tthe residence was owned by Joey Hatcher and was a total loss. There were 13 firemen on the scene for approximately 5 hours and the cause of fire is under investigation.

Fire on Grissom Street

COLUMBIA FIREMAN could only work to keep the fire at this house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Joey Hatcher from spreading to nearby buildings and homes. The fire is believed to have started at around 10:00amCT. Firefighter Dennis Loy said that at one point, it had appeared the fire was under control, but, he said, "A 'California wind' came through," and whipped it up again. The fire was still blazing and and the smoke was still blowing across Grissom and Tutt Street after 2:00pmCT, Monday, November 17, 2008, when this photo was taken.

Fire on Grissom Street: Only chimney left

After 7 hours of burning, only the chimney was left standing. Winds fed the blaze and firemen were back on the scene as late as 6:30pmCT, Monday night, November 17, 2008, to make sure the fire was out.
