Election eve concert highlights political activities at LWC Free concert is at Columbia Baptist Church. LWC will run shuttle bus to the polls tomorrow for residential LWC students who are registered in Adair County. By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs The Lindsey Wilson choral program will perform "We the People: An Election Eve Concert." The concert will be performed at 7:00pmCT at Columbia Baptist Church. It is free and open to the public. "It has been a tradition of the Lindsey Wilson Choral Program to offer an election eve concert during a presidential-election year," said Lindsey Wilson Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Programs Gerald L. Chafin. "We always enjoy presenting this program because we purposely select literature that makes the concert a truly fun listening experience for the audience." In addition to celebrating American democracy, "We the People" is also an official event of the Kentucky Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. (The nation will observe the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth on Feb. 12, 2009.) The Nov. 3 concert will include the world premiere of "Words of Lincoln." Released earlier this year, the work includes words from five of Lincoln's well-known speeches: the speech he gave on Feb. 11, 1861, at the Springfield, Ill., train station as he left to assume the presidency; his first inaugural address, given on March 4, 1861; the second executive order of the Emancipation Proclamation, given on Jan. 1, 1863; the Gettysburg Address, delivered on Nov. 19, 1863; and his second inaugural address, delivered on March 4, 1865, 42 days before his death. The title of this year's concert, "We the People," reflects diversity of both the college and the republic, Chafin said. "The diversity is reflected not only on our campus, but also in our country," he said. "Plus, the title is significant to the Lindsey Wilson Singers because of a recent visit we made to the United States Constitution Center in Philadelphia and photo of our group standing under the building's magnificent 'We the People' emblem." Not all of the music that will be performed at the Nov. 3 concert will be overtly patriotic. "Rather, our goal is to present literature that is uniquely American," Chafin said. "Therefore, we're working with several thoughts and concepts. For example, one set of music weaves a river theme. The United States has an amazing, winding river system which reveals some of our most scenic vistas. One of our anthems creates an image of the word 'flow' that puts the listener out into the current of a river." The concert will also include a centennial interpretation of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," the song from Tin Pan Alley that has become baseball's anthem. The song's lyrics were penned in 1908. "It's not exactly the fun-loving chorus that we typically sing during the seventh inning stretch at a baseball game," Chafin said. "The song has several stanzas that reveal the story of a young girl who has a passion for the game of baseball." Other pieces to be performed at the Nov. 3 concert include a setting of the Robert Frost poem "A Girl's Garden" as well as Stephen Foster's "Ring, Ring the Banjo." LWC will run shuttles to the voting booth for residential LWC students Tomorrow, November 4, 2008, the Lindsey Wilson Student Activities Office will run shuttles to the voting booth for residential Lindsey Wilson students who are registered in Adair County. And on election night, the college will host a party in the Cralle Student Union Building for students, faculty and staff to watch the returns together. Following the election, students in Professor of Communication Greg Phelps' "Political Communication & Public Affairs" class will hold a post-election issues forum. The forum is schedule for 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The location will be announced later.
