Commentary: Let AYDC help G.R.A.S. reduce euthanasia rate High euthanasia rate might be reduced, kids at juvenile facility next door could help care for animals. It works to bring out the good side in residents, she thinks, and would benefit the animals so much. To ColumbiaMagazine.com: I was talking to one of the workers at the Green River Animal Shelter and she told me that the shelter has a 70% euthanasia rate. I have read different articles in the last few years where prisons are beginning to use the inmates to take care of animals of this kind. Why can't we get a program going that allows the inmates at the juvenile facility to help out with the care of the animals at our shelter and maybe eliminate some of the euthanising that is being done and very possibly be beneficial to the inmates as well. The Walkhill Correctional Institute in upstate New York has opened a farm and works with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation--which is a non-profit organization that rescues thoroughbred horses after they are not monetarily feasible to keep. The inmates from the institution are bused to the farm and they take care of the horses thereby allowing them to live out their lives on the farm rather than being sold for meat. It is beneficial to the horses and inmates. Coldwater Comples Prison in Coldwater, Michigan works with a non-profit organization that saves dogs from being euthanized. Here the animals are taken into the prison and the inmates take care of them. There are several prisons that train dogs to be drug dogs, seeing eye dogs, and to help people with disabilities. The dogs are taken into the prisons as puppies and given to an individual inmate who takes care of that particular animal. It is a good arrangement for the animals and the inmates as it makes them responsible for something other than themselves. My son-in-law works at the prison in Eddieville, KY and he says that many stray cats have showed up there and the prisoners take care of them and get very upset if something happens to any of them.
