LWC holds election forum; Begley scholars predict Obama win

Rep. Fred Nesler (D) Mayfield, and Rep. Jack Comer (D) Tompkinsville, give respective party's arguments in Senate, Presidential races

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs

The 2008 election was a much-discussed topic Tuesday night at Lindsey Wilson College.

In V.P. Henry Auditorium, two Kentucky state representatives discussed the virtues of the Democratic and Republican candidates for president and for Kentucky U.S. senator. Later in the evening, the Begley Scholars gathered in the Emily Hundley Presidents Home to predict the outcome of the presidential election in the Electoral College.

At the forum, State Rep. Fred Nesler of Mayfield (D-2nd District) and State Rep. James Comer of Tompkinsville (R-53rd) squared off over presidential nominees Barack Obama and John McCain and Kentuckys U.S. senate race between four-term incumbent Mitch McConnell and Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford. The forum was co-sponsored by the Lindsey Wilson Bonner Leaders and Student Government Association.

Meanwhile, the Lindsey Wilson Begley Scholars predicted that Obama would win the presidency by a count of 364 to 174 in the Electoral College. The group began with the assumption that Obama will enter next Tuesdays General Election with 200 solid electoral votes and McCain will enter with 142. After analyzing 17 toss-up states, the students determined that Obama would win the presidency by 190 electoral votes.
