Metcalfe County Korean War veteranss honored James Acree, Ron DeVore, and Dwight England honored in Louisville, KY by Republic of Korea By Geniece Marcum, Senior Quest magazine, Edmonton, KY On July 24, 2008, James "Jim" Acree, Ron DeVore and Dwight England, three life time members of Metcalfe County VFW Post 6281 were honored and congratulated for their Distinguished Military service and bravery shown on the battlefield during the Korean War. The honors ceremony was hosted by the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville. Major General " Ret" Sueng-Woo Choi a highly decorated Republic of Korea Army official placed a distinctive commemoration medallion around the neck of each veteran. This medallion was designed and manufactured under the personal supervision of Major General Choi. Much symbolism has been designed into this medallion. It is designed in commemoration of the 55th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Agreement between North Korea and the United Nations. South Korea refused to sign armistice in 1953, therefore, technically, we are still at war with North Korea. "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE" is engraved on the back side of the medallion. Someone paid for the freedom we all enjoy; some with their lives. " Since I came to understand the historical significance of the United States commitment to Korea and it's democratic growth, it has become my earnest desire to express my sincere thanks to all those great American service men and women, who bravely took part in the Korean War," Choi said in a written statement. Maj. General (ret.) Choi saw this bloody conflict though the eyes of a ten year boy, and he has never forgotten the horrors he witnessed. Twenty-two allied nations fought side by side to save South Korea. More than 38,000 US service members were killed in the Korean War, which raged from June 1950 though July 1953. More than 3800 US service members died from malnutrition and brutal treatment while held captive in North Korean and Chinese prisoner of war camps. Over one million South Korean military and civilians were killed at the hands of North Korean and Chinese troops. Though neither North Korea nor China have made available their losses, it is estimated that one and one half million North Koreans and Chinese were killed. All this war, death and destruction took place in only three years. Maj. General Sung Woo Choi currently serves as Yesan County Executive. This area is just slightly smaller than state of Kentucky. He is highly regarded by the current South Korean Governmental Officials. Dwight England and brother, Hollis England enjoyed time at home and visiting with their young nephew Steve Branstetter. The men were home on leave before Dwight was shipped overseas during the Korean War. Dwight was one of three Metcalfe Veterans who recently received the Distinguished Medallion for bravery while fighting in the Korean War. Dwight was in the US Army for 21 months before his release. Nine months of that time was spent in Korea. Dwight was drafted one week and Hollis (deceased) volunteered the next. Hollis was in the Navy for four years. Their nephew, Steve, now retired, became a teacher in Metcalfe County School Systems. This story was posted on 2008-10-27 12:02:46
