Jessee's Fruit Market owner notes need for repair in city sidewalk

Columbia businessman says you notice little things, like need for sidewalk repair, when you are seeing the city from a motorized scooter
With one photo
By Linda Waggener

Junior Jessee has a request for his city council -- fix a bad place in the sidewalk on Jamestown Street.

The request is a result of his challenge with mobility, followed by a gift of a motorized chair from the folks at Trinity United Methdist Church.

When Junior's new chair gave him the freedom to travel freely about his neighborhood, he discovered a need he'd never thought about when he had full use of two strong legs.

He said, "You know, you really don't notice problems like this when you have full health, but you sure do notice them when you suddenly need help."

He demonstrated his challenge for the photo to help people understand his request. The odd bump in the sidewalk, visible in the photo, can be repaired and made wheel-chair friendly so that it no longer throws a motorized chair.

He has to exit the sidewalk and travel on the parking lot between Nation's Medicine and Five Star so he stays level.

The Jessies are long-time business owners of Jessie's Fruit Market behind IGA. They hope a few of the tax dollars they have invested in their town will be used to help him have stress-free travel.

Bump in City Sidewalk makes trip to pharmacy tough

2008-10-27 - Jamestown St, Columbia, KY - Photo By Linda Waggener.
Walkers don't pay much attention to this bump in the sidewalk, but for Junior Jessee, in his motorized chair, it's a hazard he has to face each time he travels from his home off Hurt Street to his pharmacist at Jamestown Street and Russell Road.
