COLUMBIA, KY - Three Lindsey Wilson College physical education and health students recently presented papers about two current topics in the profession of physical education.

Adair County native Adam Womack was joined by classmates Jeramy Ezell and Brandon Tucker last week at the annual meeting of the Kentucky Association of Health, Physical Education Recreation and Dance. The three presented their research at KAHPERD's state convention, held in Louisville.

Womak, a 2003 Adair County High School graduate, examined the issue of "mismatching" in high school athletics. "Mismatching" refers to the practice of allowing grade school students to play on high school teams.

Once a common practice in high school sports, Womak discovered that only four states continue to allow "mismatching" on their high school teams. Kentucky no longer allows "mismatching."

"From a litigation standpoint, it makes a lot of sense because when a grade school student was hurt competing on the high school level, parents would sue the school district," said Womack, the son of Dennis and Cathy Womack of Columbia.

KAHPERD - which is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance - is a non-profit association that represents professionals in health and safety education, physical education and sport, recreation and leisure, and dance.

In their joint presentation, Tucker and Ezell reminded audience members that physical education teachers are expected to educate students about developing health consumer habits as well as good physical-health habits.

"We hope to help students understand how to be a good consumer and also how to develop their financial literacy," said Tucker, a physical education senior from Whitley City, KY, and a graduate of McCreary Central High School.

One of the goals of Lindsey Wilson's physical education and health program is to give students these kinds of opportunities to conduct undergraduate research and present their findings to peers and other professionals.

"Exposing students to research opportunities, professional conferences and leadership positions are three advantages we offer in our program," said Ted Phillips, associate professor of physical education and physical education and health program coordinator. "These three young men received a wonderful experience by participating in this."

In addition to being physical education majors, Ezell, Tucker and Womak, also share similar career goals - all three hope to teach and coach students.

"There are a lot of important life lessons you learn through competing in athletics," said Ezell, who is from Mount Juliet, TN. "For me, being a teacher and a coach gives you two opportunities to work with young people and help them make good decisions."
