Family Place wins Cowherd Award for Excellence PHOTO By Patty Jones, Principal Col. Wm Casey Elementary School The Family Place, Family Resource Center, serving Col. Wm. Casey Elementary and John Adair Intermediate School, has been awarded the Harry J. Cowherd, MD Award for Center Excellence for 2008. One of these awards is given annually by the Kentucky Division of Family Resource/Youth Service Centers and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services in three categories: Family Resource Center, Family Resource/Youth Service Center, and Youth Service Center. While it is an honor to be nominated for this award, it is an even greater recognition to be named the recipient of the award. Paula Garrison has served as coordinator of the center for the past nine years and served as assistant coordinator for four years prior to her current position. Assistant coordinators for the center are Angie Smith and Jaime White. The center serves as a liaison between families and the schools. It is an integral part of the Kentucky Education Reform Act that has reduced barriers to learning for many Adair County students. The center was nominated by Dana Harmon, 21st Century/Camp Casey Coordinator, who works closely with the center in providing a wide array of student and family programming.
