Pre-Algebra: ACMS students understand concepts now

Hands-On Equations help Pre-Algebra students understand abstrations
With photograph

By Jennifer Kemp, Adair Co. Middle School math teacher

Adair County Middle School students in our Pre-Algebra classes have gotten "in touch" with solving equations. Students have been using an "out of the box" method to solving equations like 2x + 9 = 3x + 3.The traditional method of memorizing steps has been replaced with more creative learning strategies that empower their thinking through rationalization.

The Hands-on Equations program is unique in that the abstract knowledge needed by students to solve these equations is transformed into an easily understood and manageable set of verbal, visual, and kinesthetic approaches using manipulatives.

Program was developed by Dr. Henry Borenson

Hands-on Equations is a researched based program developed by Dr. Henry Borenson to provide an intuitive hands-on approach to presenting algebraic concepts to middle school students.

The program uses number cubes to represent the constants in the equation, and blue pawns to represent the variables.

With algebra concepts being so abstract, this hands-on method brings an advanced topic to a middle grade mindset and makes abstract linear equations visual and understandable to the students and provides students with a means of solution through a kinesthetic approach which makes sense to them.

The student's understanding of algebra is transformed from "I just don't get it!" to "Oh, I see now!"
