Valerie Flanagan 1 of 8 in state to receive math/science award

Columbia resident, a student at LWC, receives Gheens Foundation award designed to help next generation of commonwealth's math and science teachers

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs

A Lindsey Wilson College student is one of eight Kentucky education majors to receive a scholarship designed to prepare the commonwealth's next generation of math and science teachers.

Valerie Flanagan of Columbia has received a STEM Scholarship from the Gheens Foundation of Louisville, Ky. Gheens awarded the $5,000 STEM Scholarship to eight outstanding education majors at Kentucky's 20 private colleges and universities who are preparing to teach in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) discipline. Flanagan plans to teach science after she graduates from Lindsey Wilson.

"We're excited Valerie received this scholarship for two reasons," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. "The first is because it recognizes Valerie's outstanding work as an education major. The second is that it will help prepare an outstanding future science teacher for our region's schools. Educating our children about math and science is essential for our region to successfully compete in the new economy."

A 1999 Adair County High School graduate, Flanagan is an education senior with an emphasis in science. This fall, she has been a student teacher in area schools, including at nearby Russell County Middle School. She will conclude the semester as a student teacher at John Adair Intermediate School in Columbia.

"I would like to personally thank the Gheens Foundation for awarding me this scholarship," Flanagan said. "Their contribution to my education has been a tremendous help."

Flanagan started her college career as a science major, but then transferred to Lindsey Wilson when she decided that she wanted to teach middle-school science.

"Through my collegiate studies, I discovered I was interested in a variety of scientific fields and that teaching would be an excellent way of sharing my interests, particularly in the middle grades where all science fields are explored," said Flanagan, the wife of Jason Flanagan of Russell Springs, Ky.

Flanagan is the daughter of Sharon Palumbo of Columbia; sister of Nicholas Palumbo of Columbia; and granddaughter of Ray and Flora Partin, both of Columbia, KY. She said she settled on Lindsey Wilson because of its reputation among educators in the region.
>br>"I chose to attend Lindsey Wilson because its education program has an excellent reputation," Flanagan said. "I have been thoroughly impressed by all of the professors at Lindsey Wilson, especially in education. After meeting and working with them, I was sure I had made the correct decision to pursue a degree in education."
