SOUTH 61 PROJECT: Comment from CJE Ann Melton By Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton I usually don't respond to people who make negative comments about me as I believe everyone has a right to their individual opinions. The Feedback on ColumbiaMagazine.com, "Payback is hell," from L.T. Grider, brings a light to the ugliness of a situation we are experiencing here in Adair County. Surely Mr. Grider doesn't believe our Highway 61 project got cut in the name of politics. I hvae been positive to date about this project getting cut, stating that I was disappointed but had high hopes that in the future the project could be completed. Now I think it is appropriate to give the citizens some information they may not know. I talked with Mike Hancock, chief of staff of the Kentucky Department of Highways recently and asked him if he could ever remember a time in Kentucky when a project had been let, the bid came in under estimate, and the project was not awarded. He could not tell me of one time this had happened before. The State has already spent the following on the project:
Southern temporary tie is unsafe, as it is The existing southern temporary tie of the interchange project was built as a connector to the new road. The geometry of that tie is for 35 mile an hour traffic. This was meant to be temporary. When I asked Mr. Hancock what they planned to do to correct this problem he wasn't even aware that it existed. We have already experienced two accidents in this area, one being very serious. At the least, the State needs to correct that tie and make it safe for those who travel the road. I make no apologies for my support for the past governor Last, I would like to say that I make no apologies for my support for the past governor and continue to support the efforts he demonstrated to help the rural counties of Kentucky. Just look at what the investment he made here in Adair County, with the new interchange project, has meant to Adair County. Does anybody think Wal-Mart would have located here without promise of new road? Does anyone think Wal-Mart would have located on that property without that interchange being built and the promise of the new road coming to Columbia? We already have six other businesses locating there as well. Three hundred new jobs have been created for our citizens because we had a governor willing to invest some money in our community. Let's just all hope that this new administration will not forget the investment which has already been made in Adair County and on this project and will re-examine this project and complete what has already been started.
