Author/storyteller entertains, inspires ACMS students

By Jaime White

On September 30, 2008, Roberta Simpson Brown visited Adair County Middle School to entertain students and parents with her famous gift for storytelling. Sponsored by Title 1 and the Youth Services Center, Mrs. Tammy Rich was able to issue an invitation to a renowned favorite author of her Library students.

Mrs. Brown kept her audience enthralled with her supernatural suspense. Though parents' comments were peppered with the words "fun" and "interesting," students were more vocal. "She made me jump with the way she talked real soft and then shouted out all of a sudden," said one 7th grader that attended.

While we all enjoyed the night of stories, the main objective of Mrs. Brown's trip to Adair County was to inspire and motivate creative writing. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week she spent time with the 7th grade Language Arts classes at the Middle School.

'I'm going to be a writer'

When asked what they thought of the authors class presentations, most students admitted being more impressed than they expected to be. Im going to be a writer, exclaimed one young lady. Thats exactly the goal we hoped for.Parents, storytelling is a great precursor to good writing. All those tales handed down for generations serve to feed the imaginations of our next great authors. Keep relaying historical events as you remember them. Keep spending precious moments with your child making up what if and how about scenarios. Keep repeating funny anecdotes. Besides the obvious enjoyment, you will be helping students achieve higher levels of success academically.
