Thanks to coordinated effort, Pedro Plancarte has a voice

Efforts of teacher Missy Garmon, Adanta, AC School District, and Fabco, Inc. and others bring remarkable device to remarkable little boy, who is fluent in understanding both English and Spanish, and is now able to communicate

Because of the dedication of an Adair County teacher to her students, a child at Adair County Elementary now has an amazing device that permits him to have a "voice" when that was not possible just a short time ago.

Pedro Plancarte, a student in Missy Garmon's class, now has an amazing device that allows him to communicate by navigating through pages utilizing a switch with his knee. The VMax Dynovox Industries device will provide Pedro with appropriate language skills and will adapt to his needs as he adjusts from child to teen to adult.



"Pages" can be added as needed to allow Pedro to talk about academics, family, classmates, etc. New pages were added just this week to allow him to talk about his family members, to have the use of a calculator, and a page for colors.

Ms. Garmon says Pedro has learned to navigate through the pages very quickly and that he is finding new buttons every day. Two of his favorites thus far are the button that allows him to tell others he loves them and the fire engine button that allows him to clear the hallway very quickly when he travels about the school in his wheelchair, accompanied by his very dedicated aide, Ms. Ethel Burton.

An amazing thing about Pedro is that he is fluent in understanding both English and Spanish. The cost of the device was $7995.00 and mounting equipment to attach it to his wheelchair was an additional $995.00.

Funding was through an Adanta grant called the Hart-Supported Living Grant. Adanta employee Lisa Handy made Ms. Garmon aware of the device and the possible grant money and they worked together to get the device that would give Pedro a voice.

Kelly Leigers, occupational therapist, also helped with the medical reporting necessary to obtain the grant. Local speech therapists, the ACES counselor, administrators, and teachers were also instrumental in the grant being approved as many of them submitted letters of support.

When the grant was submitted last May the initial hope was to get partial funding. The grant could have been approved partially, fully, or not at all. A committee that reviews the grants met in July and approved the grant for full funding. A local company, Fabco, Inc., designed and donated a device to mount the switch onto the chair.
