3,000 hours of community service delivered in one day
Photos will be posted with this article

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs

For the 19th time in the last 18 years, members of the Lindsey Wilson College community took time off from their quotidian activities to show their appreciation to the local community by celebrating Malvina Farkle Day.

Malvina Farkle Day which is named after mythical college student and employee who was dedicated to community service and good times includes a morning of community service activities, followed by an afternoon of campus games. Classes are dismissed for the day and offices are closed as Lindsey Wilson students, faculty and staff work together on more than dozen community service projects.

This year, members of the Lindsey Wilson community combined to give more than 3,000 hours of community service in one day.

The purpose of Malvina Farkle Day is to remind our students, faculty and staff that they are members of a larger community, said Lindsey Wilson Student Activities Director Bobbie A. Owen. So its important that we take a day to show our appreciation to members of the community by giving back a day of service.

We also hope the day will inspire some of our students to become more involved in community-service activities, whether its on campus or in the community. The day also shows how much can be accomplished when we all work together.

In addition to nine service activities on campus, this years Malvina Farkle projects took place at the following locations in Columbia-Adair County and Taylor County:

  • Adair County Cooperative Extension Service Farm Safety Day
  • Adair County Eldercare
  • Adair County Elementary School
  • Adair County Family Resource Center
  • Adair County Headstart
  • Adair County High School;
  • Adair County High School Band Room Library
  • Adair County Little League Park
  • Adair County Middle School
  • Breeding United Methodist Church
  • Bull Run Lane Clean-Up
  • Christian Life Center
  • Colonel William Casey Elementary School
  • Green River Animal Shelter
  • Homeplace on the Green River
  • Robertson Pools
  • Taylor Ford Road Clean-Up
  • Trinity United Methodist Church
  • and Wal-Mart car wash
The day was first celebrated in spring 1996, then later that year it was moved to an annual fall event.
