Hey Band Mom, I need your help

When the Adair County Band hits the road, the convoy is as disciplined and as organized as a military convoy or relief group headed to a disaster. Being a Band Parent offers a special inclusiveness, a membership in a group which this self-described "newb" gets emotional about

By Shamarie Claiborne, Band Mom

At the South Central Marching Band Classic in Glasgow last night, wewere talking about what we'd miss after our years as band parents areover, after our kids graduated.

Winston Keltner put it best last night. "I will miss the fellowship!"

It is like one big family. The children work so hard! They call us all"Hey band mom" when they need something.

Jaylee White was the first one to call me that. She yelled, "Hey, BandMom. I need your help." And I did what any other parent would I havedone, I went to her aid.

It takes a lot of organization to do what the parents, the supportcrew, do. On the road, besides the equipment and personnel, thelogistics of feeding is a major task.

You can get an idea of how it works by clicking on adairband.com. Foodassignments are posted. We rotate responsibilities among the parentsin the various sections of the band as to who has responsibilities forwhat.

Last night the food committee fed over 200 people on the road. The post performancepicnic is a big event, also. At Glasgow, we performed at 6:30, andthen had to wait until after 9:00 for the results to be announced andthe trophies to be handed out, so you can imagine how hungry everyonewas.

It's not fancy, but it is good. I had a great ham and cheesesandwich last night. And there were lots of veggies, fruits, chips, andwonderful desserts.

We're blessed with wonderful leaders, like Mr. Allen and Mr. Lloyd, and with people who have great executive skills like Pam Hancock, whobusiness is food service as well as being a parent, and Judy Keltner, who is an executive at Lake Cumberland Area DevelopmentDistrict.

Someone asked me whether we have to buy drinks after we get to thecompetition site. The answer is that we bring our own beverage center. You just go to the cooler with the label of your fav: Ski, Mt. Dew,water, Gaterade, Coke, or mixed. You name it. We're as likely to have it as a fast food restaurant.

When the party's over, it's not over until everything is cleaned up. And,oh yeah, you put your can in the bag to recycle for money! In theBible it says "And a little child shall lead them." On recycling, I'mproud to say, Adair County schools wrote the book, and no one isfollowing it more than the Band Parents.

The system works so well. It saves time. It creates a sense ofcommunity and family. It saves money we badly need.

Pardon me if I gush a bit about the feeling which comes from being aband mom. I'm a newby this year. It's our first year to get the fullimpact of the thrill. Maybe I won't cry now when I am caught miles awayfrom home by one of the kids and they yell, "Hey, Band Mom," but 5years from now, if I'm in Dylan's college town, should that be milesfrom Columbia, the emotion may be too great. You'll have to forgiveme, then, if I'm get teary.
