LWC freshmen write to military in Afghanistan, Iraq

By Duane Bonifer

Amanda Cecil doesn't personally know anyone serving in the U.S. military that is stationed in Iraq or Afghanistan. But the Lindsey Wilson College freshman felt compelled to write a thank-you letter to the men and women serving the U.S. military in the Middle Eastern and Asian nations.

Cecil was one of several dozen Lindsey Wilson freshmen who wrote a thank-you letter to U.S. military stationed in the two countries. The activity was sponsored by Academic Affairs and Student Activities offices as part of opening-year activities for LWC freshmen.

"I think everybody knows somebody involved in the wars," said Cecil, an English major from Hodgenville, KY. Writing a letter is "a way for us to show our appreciation in case they didn't already know it.

The hand-written letters, which were sent to area residents who are stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq, ranged from a simple "thank you" to a note of appreciation for the men and women who are putting their lives on the line "to promote the cause of freedom in another country."

Several members of Adair County freshman Derek Cape's family have served in the military over the years. In his letter, "I told them I appreciated what they are doing and I respect them for their courage," Cape said.

Lance Harrington, a freshman from Mount Juliet, TN, said the letters from Lindsey Wilson freshmen sent a clear message to U.S. military serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"It showed them that college kids really care about what's going on in the world," he said.
