LWC Volleyball team sweeps opener with St. Catharine ColumbiaMagazine.com SPORTS Raiders take all three matches, 25-20, 25-3, 25-12 By Chris Wells, LWC Director of Sports Information The Lindsey Wilson College volleyball team opened the 2008 season with a 3-0 sweep of visiting St. Catharine (KY) College of Springfield, KY, on Wednesday night, August 27, 2008 at Biggers Sports Center. The Blue Raiders played a near flawless match -- committing just three hitting errors on the night -- in defeating Mid-South Conference newcomer St. Catharine 25-20, 25-3, 25-12. Lindsey Wilson (1-0, 1-0 in the MSC) recorded 38 kills to the visitors nine and recorded a .432 attacking percentage in the win. St. Catharine (0-1, 0-1 MSC) controlled the early stages of game one and built a 14-11 lead. Lindsey Wilson countered with seven of the next eight points to take an 18-15 lead. The visiting Patriots climbed within two (19-17) but would get no closer as the Blue Raiders won the opening game 25-20.'' Game two: LWC 25-3 In game two, Lindsey Wilson freshman Alyca Morrison recorded four of her match-high five service aces to lead the Blue Raiders to a 25-3 win. Freshmen Kayla Koerber and Mirjam Pfyl combined for nine kills in just 14 attempts in the game to help Lindsey Wilson score 14 consecutive points. Game three: LWC 25-12 In the final game, the Blue Raiders scored 17 of the games first 23 points and coasted to the 25-12 win. Pfyl led the Blue Raiders with nine kills, while freshman Sophie Alternett added eight. Alternett led the team with a .615 attacking percentage. Junior Kelly Burke led the Blue Raiders with 19 assists while junior Sarah Kline added 14 assists. Freshman Rachel Anderson contributed a team-high 12 digs. St. Catharine freshman Samantha Gehler led the Patriots with five kills in the loss.
