Obituary: James Willard Nokes, 74

COLUMBIAMAGAZINE.COM OBITUARIES

Mr. Nokes was a member of a respected Adair County family. He was a retired truck driver who earned the Million Miler Award. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a Mason and a U.S. Army Veteran who will be accorded military rites by VFW Post 6097.

James Willard Nokes, 74, 115 Music Lane, Columbia, KY, passed away Monday, August 25, 208, at 2:32pm, at his home, after an illness.

The funeral service is Thursday, August 28, 2008, at 1:00pmCT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY, with Rev. William R. Davenport officiating.



He was the son of the late James Arnie and Mary Willin England Nokes.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean Estes Nokes, Columbia, KY, and the following:
  • Two daughters: Susan Nokes of Columbia, KY; and Angie Pierce and her husband Allen, Campbellsville, KY

  • One brother: Shelby Nokes, Louisville, KY

  • Three grandchildren: Brandon Scott Nokes, Reba Jean Shanklin, and Shelbie Marie Pierce

  • Two aunts: Dorothy Fletcher, Glensfork, KY; and Estelle Bye, New Albany, IN

  • And several nieces, nehews, and a host of other relatives and friends
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and had retired in 1993 from Frito Lay in Louisville, KY, as a truck driver. He had received the Million Miler award in 1987. Mr. Nokes was in the U.S. Army and was a member of Lodge #511, Valley Station, KY

Interment will be in Haven Hill Cemetery with military honors by Columbia VFW Post 6097.

Masonic rites will be conducted Wednesday evening at 7:00pm. by the Columbia Masonic Lodge #96 at the funeral home.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm, Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.
