WRH Hospital Auxiliary News August 2008

By Sue C. Stivers, Membership & Public Relations Chairman
The Westlake Regional Hospital Auxiliary met Monday, August 18, 2008, at the Hospital Cafe' beginning at 6:30pmCT. President Margaret Sparks called the meeting to order and welcomed those in attendance.

Secretary Sharon Harris read the minutes of the past meeting. The financial report was given by Treasurer Evelyn Phelps.

Get well cards were signed by the members and will be sent to Barbara Barnes and Bland Bardin, great grandson of Wanda Bardin. A "Thinking of You" card was sent to Doris Beard. Everyone was thrilled to know she was home and being cared for by her daughter Phyllis Burton. We miss you Doris and think of you often.

President Sparks thanked all the auxiliary members who volunteer their time in working in the gift shop. There is always a need for volunteers to work in the gift shop. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact President Sparks at (270) 384-4139.

Plans were made for the Health Fair which will be held September 13. Again this year, the Auxiliary will be working under the big tent with delicious plate lunches, plus a large variety of homemade cakes, pies, cookies of all kinds, fried apple pies, sandwiches, candy, etc. Proceeds from the sale will go toward financing projects at the Hospital. This helps every citizen of Adair County. Come out and support the Auxiliary with this project.

Tickets will be sold on a beautiful crystal bowl. If you would like to purchase tickets in advance contact President Sparks at (270) 384-4139 or any member of the Auxiliary.

President Sparks introduced the guest speaker as being one of our own...Sue Stivers, who gave an interesting and educational program on "Scams Against Seniors". She shared tips on financial crimes, identity theft, robbery and fraud that seniors are often the target. Older people especially are complacent or forgetful of details and may be embarrassed to admit they've been "had" by a scam artist. Stivers reminded everyone that Adair County can contact the Better Business Bureau offices in either Bowling Green or Louisville to report a suspected scam or to get information. This is a free public service available to all Kentuckians.

Shirley Grider shared an inspirational reading entitled "Beauty Tips" which dealt with the beauty inside of a person...not the outer beauty, which everyone enjoyed.

Evelyn Phelps gave highlights on her recent cruise to Alaska on the Diamond Princess Ship. It was very interesting and those who have not visited Alaska wished they could have been with her.

Hostesses were Mary Hadley and Shirley Reliford who served an array of delicious refreshment to the following: Wanda Bardin, Charles Barnes, Louise Brock, Pauline Davenport, Betty Flaynik, Shirley Grider, Mary Hadley, Sharon Harris, Charles and Yvonne Marshall, Dorothy Murray, Lila Loy, Evelyn Phelps, Shirley Reliford, Margaret Sparks, Sue Stivers, Betty Thorsen, Mary Evelyn Walker and Eva Mae Wilkinson.

The next meeting will be September 15, beginning at 6:30pmCT. Guest Speaker will be Rick Wilson and the hostesses will be Shirley Grider and Betty Thorsen. For information on becoming a member of the Auxiliary contact President Margaret Sparks at 384-4139 or any Auxiliary member. Dues are only $5.00 per year. The "Welcome Mat" is always out for new members.
