Columbia-Adair Rotary Club News: Walking, dental health

A Healthier Columbia and Adair County: Rotary Club has special guests: Mr. Richard Phelps, Mrs. Becky Grider, and Mrs. Oreta Morris, with inspiring message on walking; she's walked at least one and one-half times around the world. Dr. Janella Brown reports on dental screenings at John Adair Intermediate School, plans for more.

By Doug McCammish, Rotary Club of Columbia and Adair County

The Rotary Club of Columbia & Adair County continues its project to encourage and support a healthy lifestyle for folks in our area. In the club meeting on August 11, 2007 we had a guest presentation by Mr. Richard Phelps with his mother Mrs. Becky Grider and his grandmother Mrs. Oreta Morris.

Mrs. Morris, who at 95 years young is the picture of health, walks daily and has been walking daily for more than 50 years. Richard made a "back of the envelope" conservative estimate that his grandmother had walked more than 37,500 miles in those 50 years.

That's one and one half times around the world! Richard actually thinks that she may have walked twice that far and Mrs. Morris didn't contradict him. Just in case you wondered, the Rotary Club doesn't plan to claim all that mileage for our current campaign.

Club President Hunter Durham told the story that Mr. and Mrs. Morris used to walk at the Christian Life Center, but they walked in opposite directions. Most couples walk together, but Mr. & Mrs. Morris would stop to kiss when they passed each other - one of the more unusual benefits of walking!

Dr. Janella Brown speaks on dental screening at JAIS

In a second presentation that same evening, Dr. Janella Brown, local dentist, spoke about a dental screening planned for John Adair Intermediate School on September 17.

The screening is being organized and planned by The Family Place, Family Resource Center with the help of a van provided by Colgate. Families of students have been notified and permission slips sent home for the screening.

Also this fall, an opportunity will be provided by the Cumberland Family Medical Center for Col. William Casey and ACES students to receive a dental review through the support of a Federal HRSA grant - also supported by The Family Place. For more information about these opportunities, contact The Family Place at (270) 384-9752.

Nearing the end of August, we encourage everyone to report their walking mileage to the Rotary Club either by using email (RotaryWalk@gmail.com) or by filling out a card at one of the local banks. Let's all get out and walk! It's good for us. Take someone with you and talk while you walk. Have a real conversation. Be careful of the kissing though--that might lead to trouble.
