Insects of Kentucky: The fight. The survivor

    2008-08-23 - Photo By Pen.
Pen took this sequence yesterday of a life and death struggle in the animal world. He writes, with the left photo,"The FIGHT: Watched this wasp try for 10 full minutes to find a way to bring the grasshopper back to a growing nest. He'd land, struggle, then take flight again, veering crazily until he had to land again and regroup. Eventually, he lost his hold, and the grasshopper fell about 8 feet to the ground." On the right, "The SURVIVOR: Free and stunned after a rather long flight in the grasp of a hungry wasp." FLICKR A Today, Saturday, August 23, 2008, Today's Picture Album photo.

LONG LENGTHS OF WHITE FENCE now stretch on both sides of KY 61 South near the KY 80 intersection. The latest, above, is on the Holladay Place development. According to Columbia Super Wal Mart Manager Danny Bragg, the new store is on schedule to open on its October 29, 2008, target date. The constuction is ahead of schedule, he said, "But we the fixtures are scheduled for mid September and that's when we'll take possession of the building and start setting up the store."

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Crape myrtle on Jamestown Hill

2008-08-23 - Corner Miller Ave. & Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
2008 HAS BEEN A GREAT YEAR FOR CRAPE (SOMETIMES CREPE) MYRTLE in Adair County. A landmark shrub, above, is in the David Eubanks' yard at the intersection of Jamestown Street and Miller Avenue. A number of showy ones are on Columbia's Avenue of Flowers, Tutt Street. Also worth noting, is one on the Nell Rogers property on Fortune ST. The success of the plant begs the question: Why is there not a concerted effort to add them to the landscape now that cultivars have proven hardy for this lattitude? The photograph was taken from Columbia church of Christ.

    The Epicurean Kentuckian: Blackberries

    2008-08-23 - Photo By Pen.
The QUINTESSENTIAL COBBLER INGREDIENT. This year's crop was a good one, and many braved the wrath of chiggers, endured the startling sound of Junebugs taking flight, and overcame their fear of slithery blackberry bramble denizens to harvest the national fruit of Adair County, over which there is much debate. Are they best in jam on hot-buttered biscuits? Frozen and used for ice cubes in drinks all year round? Served fresh with sugar and cream? Made into the ultimate comfort food, blackberry cobbler? Or eaten as Nature indended, straight from the vine, a finger staining berry at a time? But there's no argument that they are their taste is supreme; and they are nutritious, too.
