By Dave Cazalet, Jr.

Somerset Community College has distinctive bicycles for use by Collegeemployees and students on the Somerset Campus. The new program iscalled "Ride-A-Bike" and is intended to save energy and improvehealth.

According to Larry Abbott, the Chief Maintenance and Operations Officer atSCC, the new program offers several advantages, "Riding a bike aroundcampus can improve the riders health, reduce stress, cut their gasoline costsand it is more fun than searching for a parking space," he explained.

Students or employees can participate in the Ride-A-Bike Program by fillingout an application form and paying a $10 annual fee at the cashiers office. Allthe bikes are locked to conveniently located bicycle racks on campus.Participants have a key to the locks.

Students, who need to travel between the SCC Campus North and SCCCampus South, can use the bicycles rather than getting in their cars and thentrying to find one of the limited parking spaces available.

The new bicycle program was the idea of SCC President and CEO, Dr. JoMarshall.

We are always looking for ways to make life on the SCC Campus a little moreenjoyable and student friendly, Marshall explained.

Participants must agree to use the bikes only on the SCC Campus. They arenot intended to be taken off SCC property.

We are hoping that people will enjoy the sunshine on your face, the breeze inyour hair and the fact that you are getting healthier, Abbott said.

There are currently 20 bicycles available on campus. Mens bikes are orange, while womens bikes are a pearl pink.Somerset Community College is a comprehensive two-year institution ofhigher education.
