The Dry Hole

2008-08-20 - South Central Kentucky - Photo By Ed Waggener.
ColumbiaMagazine.com and other news media get a lot of calls when gushers are hit, but this is the first time any wanted to publicize a dry hole. The dry hole was drilled in last night, after reaching the second break in the Knox formation. All farmer Wid Harris and fellow oil hunters have to show for their effort to help the nation's energy crisis is a pile of limestone dust and this dry hole. "I located the well myself," he said, "but it might be that when we moved the well over 100 feet because we were too close to the creek--that's what threw us off." Still, he said, he'll probably try again. He has an interest in one well that is producing a small amount of crude--"May three and one-half to four gallons a day,"--he says, down near Jones Chapel in the Gradyville Oilfield. Harris said that the dry hole does mean his wife will have to continue teaching. "I called her and told her she can't retire on the income of this well," he said. For the record, he didn't actually put the dollar down the hole. "That's the tips on four haircuts," he said. To make ends meet, Mr. Harris also operates Town Barber Shop and various and sundry other enterprises, including being the longest serving Magistrate in Adair County history and owning the only combination barber shop/marriage parlor in Adair County. With all the bad luck, he was able to laugh through his tears and continues to "Endeavor to persevere."A Today, Thursday, August 21, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

The Epicurean Kentucky: Dinner for three

2008-08-20 - Photo By Pen.
NOW OR NEVER TIME FOR TOMATOES: "We've hit that point in the summer when the tomatoes are coming too fast to eat them all sliced. I started this dish with about 2 oz of country ham, sliced into small pieces. Once it had cooked, I added three small sliced quartered zucchini and a sliced onion and cooked until some of the zucchini began to brown. Then I added olive oil and minced fresh garlic. Three completely ripe, now-or-never tomatoes added a bright, sweet note to this sauce and deglazed the pan, picking up even more flavor from the onions and ham. I added some more olive oil and a little balsamic vinegar, then simmered for 10 minutes while farfalle cooked, and finished with fresh ground pepper and parmesan." -PenFlickr. 2008-08-21 - Near Shepherd School, KY 206, Columbia, KY - Photo By Betty Sue Jasper.
"We are as the wings of a butterfly, bound together with the love of God," Betty Sue Jasper quotes from an unnamed philosopher, to caption this photo of a butterfly in her yard. Rita S. Adkins has identified the butterfly as a Common Buckeye, a species which is widespread in the U.S.Flickr. A Today, Thursday, August 21, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

Crash closes Hudson Street Wednesday afternoon

2008-08-21 - Franklin Ford, Hudson Street, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
STREET CLOSED: Hudson Street from Walker Street to the new Greensburg Street access to KY 61 North was closed for several hours Wednesday afternoon and evening, August 20, 2008, after a vehicle clipped the utility pole above. Seven workmen from Taylor County RECC, were repairing the damage, above. In the buckets are Gary Smith and Johnny Edwards. Also there were David Karnes, J.D. Biggs, Amos Tackett, Dennis Roberts, and Adam Taylor from TRECC. Up ahead, Joe Vanarsdale of the Kentucky Highway Department routed traffic across Walker Street, while Craig Reece detoured traffic off Hudson onto Greensburg Street on the other end. Only one location, Jackie's Furniture, on the right, was without power because of the incident. Workmen on the scene said that the driver of the vehicle blacked out at the Walker Street stop, his vehicle struck a glancing blow against the green overhead door in the building on the right, then came back onto Hudson Street, then clipped the utility pole before striking seven vehicles displayed at Franklin Ford. The driver was not injured, according to information received last night. Kentucky State Police Trooper Jamie Richard of KSP Post 15, Columbia, KY, investigated the incident, and units of Duo County Telecom were on the scene as well. Birds of Kentucky: Territorial hummingbirds

2008-08-21 - Fairplay, KY - Photo By Kathy Keith.
Kathy Keith captured these classic photographs of FairplayHummingbirds. She writes, "There are several hummingbirds that come to feed but there is one which sits and guards the feeder, then runs the others off. You can see them flying around trying to defend and protect the feeder so the "stray" hummingbird cannot feed." A Today's Picture Album photo for August 21, 2008.
