Comment on No Entrance sign at Columbia Cemetery About: Photo: Columbia Cemetery entrance To ColumbiaMagazine.com: According to the No Outlet sign, it appears once you are there, there is no going back! Gave me a laugh! s/Reba McGinnis Montgomery Thanks so much for commenting. That is humorous. The thought behind posting the entrance photo, however, was simply that this is beautiful and inviting place to visit; that across the chain there is a wonderful winding, beckoning byway. It is such a shame that one of Columbia's most beautiful spots, supported by public funds, is so inaccessible. So many people love to visit gravesites of relatives buried in the Columbia Cemetery. Many may just go there to get acquainted with future neighbors. Many of my folks are buried there, and I so wish the chain were down, as Mayor Pat Bell once ordered. I go there every chance it get. Most of the time I walk there or ride a bicycle. I prefer to access it from Monroe Street, but that is a bit of an obstacle course. Of course an opened City Cemetery would require more police presence, but Chief Harris has said that his department can provide it. On the other hand, the chain does make the cemetery a more private trysting place; so if one is into that kind of thing, it may be good to keep it off limits. The sign, "No outlet," is incorrect, by the way. There is an outlet onto Wall Street on the back side of the cemetery. Such a shame the Mayor didn't prevail on this one. -EW This story was posted on 2008-08-21 03:21:31
