Mr. Richard Phelps to portray Elder Z.T. Williams at CCC Elder Williams played an important role in the history of the Columbia Christian Church, which is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. He was pastor there for 20 years, and was an important merchant in Columbia and Montpelier, an educator who played a role in Columbia Christian College and the Montpelier Academy, a early adopter of new inventions, writer, and traveller By Ed Waggener Mr. Richard Phelps has added a third historical figure to his repertoire of impersonations, this time with one of Columbia's most interesting personalities, Elder Z.T. Williams (1849-1923). His first performance portraying the "Life & Time of Elder Z.T. Williams" will be at the Columbia Christian Church on Sunday evening, August 17, 2008, at 6:30pmCT. The dramatic presentation is part of the 140 year celebration of the Columbia Christian Church, where Elder Z.T. Williams was pastor from 1896 to 1900 and from 1906 to 1921. Mr. Phelps' earlier portrayals of early Columbian Daniel Trabue and Adair's First County Court and Circuit Clerk, William Caldwell have won high critical acclaim. Mr. Phelps said he became interested in Elder Williams through the years as a congregant of the Columbia Christian Church. "His name is in one of the stain glass windows," he said, "I always wonder about him. Then I read all I could at the library and researche his life and found that he was a fascinating individual." Elder Williams played such a big role in the history of the church, were he was pastor for a total of about 20 years, that it seemed fitting that a portrayal of his life should be performed as part of the church's celebration of its 140th anniversary."With the passage of time," Mr. Phelps said, "Z.T. Williams has been somewhat forgotten. That's a shame." He was not only a highly respected minister, but he was a merchant, educator, and statesman, and a very entrepeneurarial individual. He travelled extensively and sent voluminous reports from a trip to the Holy Land to be published in the Adair County News, the weekly newspaper here in his day. As with the Trabue and Caldwell performances, the audience can expect a full range of emotions, from quiet narrative, to surprise scenes, to humor from Mr. Phelps. Elder Williams' arrival in the sanctuary from his present location across the street in the Columbia City Cemetery will start the presentation off with an unforgettable scene. Mr. Phelps said that he has been preparing for the performance for the past two months. "It's been a great challenge," he said. "He was a great man." To allow the audience more insight into the life of the Elder Z.T. Williams, Mr. Phelps is sharing this timeline he prepared for the performance: THE LIFE & TIME OF ELDER Z. T. WILLIAMS Name Zachariah Taylor Williams "Z. T."
The public is invited to attend the performance. This story was posted on 2008-08-16 10:56:30
