Birds of Kentucky: Great blue heron

2008-08-04 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings Road, Adair Co. Magisterial District 02, Columbia, KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne.
IT'S A DAY OF JUBILATION IN THE HOLLER: A long quest has finally met with success. Photographer Shamarie Claiborne has diligently worked to get a photo of a Great Blue Heron. Along the way, she's captured hundreds of other fascinating denizens of The Holler with her camera, but until now, the Great Blue Heron eluded her. When she did, it was a stunner. She writes, "Got one...It was getting ready to rain and the sky was gray," and she was able to capture this intriguing silhouette. A Today, Monday, August 4, 2008 Today's Best Picture Album photo

Mr. Allen with ACHS Band away at camp

2008-08-04 - Columbia, KY - Photo By Doyle Lloyd.
"AWAY" AT SUMMER BAND CAMP: Tim Allen gives instructions to the band during its highly discplined two week summer camp. Resourcefully conserving funds in anticipation of the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade appearance, the band held summer camp in Columbia, KY. The young musicians had the same benefits of being at summer camp, but got to stay at home. There was one iron clad rule: They had to obey all the rules they would have had at a band camp at another site. They could make no doctor's appointments, take days off, or do anything they could not do at an out-of-county campus. A Today, Monday, August 4, 2008 Today's Best Picture Album photo

"My Aunt Catherine Montgomery a very good soul with fun and joy in her heart! I don't know how she is my 'Aunt' but that is always what I have called her. I think she is the daughter of one of my great grandparent's siblings. But don't hold me to that...." writes Shamarie Claiborne, with this portrait of a remarkable Adair County treasure. The photo was taken Sunday, August 3, 2008, at the Hamlett Reunion. Flickr.A Today, Monday, August 4, 2008 Today's Best Picture Album photo
