EVENTS: Spotlighting, in brief, today's events for Day 215 of 2008 (Leap Year - 151 days remaining).Campbellsville Baptist Church Steeple by Larry Smith

Larry Smith, WHVE FM 92.7 Radio News Anchor, a resident of Campbellsville, a native of Green County, and whose day job is in Columbia, sent this striking photo of Campbellsville's most familiar--and tallest-- and mark, the steeple on the Campbellsville Baptist Church. "From anywhere in Campbellsville," he says, "it is a beautiful sight. I just happened to notice how the sun was hitting the steeple from this angle and took the picture. Whether you are in downtown Campbellsville or on the university Campus, and the light is right to photograph in the direction of the church, the steeple always adds interest." Fat man on bicycle faster than C-ville St car traffic (Adv)

    2008-08-03 - B&B QUE - Photo By Larry Smith.
LARRY SMITH, popular radio personality at WHVE FM 92.7, snapped this photo depicting Happy Chandler's famed Fat man on a bicycle. It's of Ed Waggener, factotum at ColumbiaMagazine.com who still has a driver's license, but is trying to support the Rotary Club/Parks & Rec/UK Cooperative Extension Service effort to make Columbia friendlier to walkers and bikers. Amazingly, the trip by bike to Ol' Joe's B&B Que was faster, round trip, than it would have been by car. The bike was powered the two miles on one pulled pork sandwich, one of B&B's grilled rosanears, and coffee One car passed the 168 year old rider on the way down the hill, but coming back, the rider was able to pass more than 20 cars, blocked in Campbellsville ST. traffic. The bike is a Schwinn Coffee, a comfort bike with three speed in hub transmission, a coaster brake plus front and year calipre brakes, a luggage rack, and a sofa-like saddle. It's a demo from Main Street Bikes, Shelbyville, KY, which has an MSRP of $389.95, but is on sale from MSB for $299.95.

With Bypass opening, is it time to reclaim Burkesville Street?

2008-08-03 - Burkesville ST, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
WITHOUT A STOP LIGHT, speeding motorists can run 50mph or more down Burkesville Street, now. It's a nightmare for runwater runoff and flooding down Town Creek. And an unnecessary urban heat zone. Isn't it time to turn around a half century of blockheaded thinking and reclaim Burkesville Street for people, for residents of Columbia, for local business? Picture Burkesville Boulevard with either a center tree lined median or, better, tree lined sidewalk borders, on-street parking, a 15-20 mph speed limit, four-way stops with pedestrian crosswalks at every crossing, and narrow lanes of traffic. Picture people walking, riding motorscooters and electric cars. Picture being able to scoot about town in a golf cart. Picture making the street friendly to taxpaying residents again. Picture making this part of Columbia one of the most livable areas in any downtown anywhere. With the kind of leadership which is spearheading the Walk Around the Earth and Second Sunday in October movement, it could be done.-EW

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Flowers at Courthouse

2008-08-03 - Old Adair County Courhouse, 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Sunday morning, August 3, 2008, provided a show of flowers. Besides these planted by Adair Fiscal Court on the old Courthouse lawn, the red geraniums around the fountain plaza and the orange daylilies planted by the Columbia Street Department and the Adair County garden club are brightening the Downtown. A Today, Sunday, August 3, 2008 photo.
