Susie Grant with friends at ACPL book signing

2008-08-02 - Adair County Public Library, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
ADAIR COUNTY AUTHOR SUSIE GRANT with Corrine Bell and her daughter, Sandra Kay Bell, two of the many people who bought her book, "The True Story of a German War Bride," or brought one by for signing Saturday, August 2, 2008. Corrine Bell told the author that she had been reading her column through the years in all the Columbia newspapers, from its inception in The Columbia Statesman in March of 1968, at the urging of its editor and its society editor, the late Audrey Waggener, and continuing through today's Adair Progress. The 40 years the column has continued are unbroken except for a couple of times she tried to quit, but readers insisted she continue. When one buyer told Mrs. Grant she had a handsome husband, she said, "Yes. I know. Why do you think I followed him half-way around the world?" She said that one of hardest things to get used to was the wonderful Southern Hospitality she enjoyed when she arrived from Germany in the Little Cake area of Adair County. She remembers how everybody in the county welcomed here, and how happy she was that her new family was so beloved. The Dr. B.J. Bolen, told her, when he found out who she had married, "You drove your ducks to a good pond." Sidney Grant, her husband, held the record for tenure as an Adair County Magistrate at the time of his death, and was a beloved member of one of Adair's biggest families.
