The urgent need for recycling:
City landfill cost for June 2008. $13,050.11

RECYCLING STATUS IN THE CITY: Cost trend is down

By Ed Waggener

The City of Columbia Sanitation Department sent $13,050.11 for garbage tipping at the landfill in the month of June 2008, a lower figure than recent months, but still an annualized drain on the city budget of $159,210. (Figured on daily basis, 366 Leap Year Days)

The June 2008 figure is the latest released by City Clerk Carolyn Edwards

Although there is no easy way to attribute the downward vector for the City expense, it might be credited to the aggressive recycling program by the Adair County Recycling Center (ARC) and Adair County Solid Waste Coordinator A.L. Sinclair. In the past year, the Recycling Center has gone from a $7,000 drain on the County Budget to a profit of $20,000, a $27,000 a year turn-around.

At present, the City has no organized Recycling Program. Many believe that, with bold leadership, 90% of the trash could be recycled, reducing the cost for tipping fees, and raising revenues for the ARC, and making more money available for badly need parks, sidewalks, and restoration of the community to a more people friendly, pedestrian and cyclist community.

City Council's next meeting is Monday, August 4, 2008.
