Good eating: It would be nice to be adopted by Lora Atchley

Sweet corn preparation doesn't get any fresher than this! It's cooked at the garden!

By Ed Waggener

It would be nice to belong to Lora Atchley. Day before yesterday, she froze 199 bags of sweet corn to share with her children, Lindy Barr, Melissa Bryant, and Shell Leigh.

Mrs. Atchley was assisted in the prodigious task by two hard working grandsons, Colton Barr and Brady Bryant, who got to eat some of the fresh pulled, right out of the garden corn on the cob, boiled on a old wood cookstove set up outside for occasions like this.

Corn on the cob, fresh from the garden has been hailed by liberal radio personality Garrison Keillor as the Second Best Thing There Is, and his description of fresh is nowhere near that of Mrs. Atchley's.

The exact location of the operation is a secret, because there's still sweet corn to harvest and freeze and give away to family members, so y'all shouldn't get in the way; but it is somewhere the far side of Leon Huff's and next door to Larry Smith radio, FM 92.7, Russell Road.
PS: It would be hard to beat the corn from Russell Guy Perkins' garden. I haven't tried any just boiled corn, but I have been having 3.5 minute microwaved in the husk corn on the cob from a mess given to me by Russell Guy Perkins. With a lot of EEOV and some sea salt, it's made mighty good eating--a great snack.
