Westlake groundbreaking 2008: Rusty Tungate
2008-07-29 - Westlake Drive, Columbia, KY .
RUSTY TUNGATE Westlake Healthcare Team CEO/Administrator, outlined the history of Westlake Regional Hospital, from it's opening in October 1980, through expansions preceding the $19.8 million third floor addition and renovation started yesterday, Monday, July 28, 2008. At the same time, he announced that a new administration building for the hospital is planned to be built townward from the main building on the spot above the present helipad, on Westlake Drive. At left is Mitchell Harris, Chairman and 10 year member of the Board of Trustees of the Westlake Regional Hospital. Harris, the brother of Adair County Second District Magistrate Wid Harris told the audience that the Hospital organization's economic impact is huge: It generates a $600,000 payroll every two weeks, translating to $15,000,000 annually.

ADAIR COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL BAND DIRECTOR TIM ALLEN directed a select group of brass and reeds players in the "Star Spangled Banner," early in the program. As happens everywhere the band performs, the rendition was a highlight of the program. Visible in the photo are, from left, front row, Christian Talley, Chris Lloyd, Cameron Gray, Alex Yadon, Paige Coomer, and Tyler Giles. Second row, Heather Jasper. Third Row, Kisha Burton. The Sousaphonists are Dustin Huckaby and Todd Smith. The hidden musicians on the last row are Isaac Payne and Will Rich. Westlake Regional Hospital, in the background, will be dramatically different in approximately 18 months, with the addition of a third floor, renovation of the rest of the building, and a contemporary new design by JRA architects.

ADAIR COUNTY JUDGE EXECUTIVE ANN MELTON worked out the tight schedule for Rep. Ed Whitfield, with the congressman's field representative, Sandy Simpson. The congressman had two big stops in Adair County. Besides the Westlake groundbreaking, he made a second stop at the Adair County Courthouse Annex, where Judge Melton's office organized a big check presentation to members of the Breeding Fire Department. In the background, around 200 people were gathered for the groundbreaking, approximately 100 in the tent, at this time, and an equal number outside. Later, as rain clouds sprinkled, all of the crowd moved in the tent. Judge Melton appoints members of the five member governing body of the hospital system which now includes two of her appointees and a third she plans to re-appoint, Treasurer Jim Evans.

WID HARRIS, Adair County Second District Magistrate is the longest serving magistrate ever, on the Adair Fiscal Court. His brother, Mitchell Harris, is chairman of the Westlake Regional Hospital Board of trustees and is currently the senior member of the board. The hospital is in Squire Harris's Second Magisterial District.
