Insects of Adair County: Praying mantis

2007-08-26 - Adair County, KY - Photo By Betty Sue Jasper.
"THIS LITTLE GUY LOVED TO HAVE HIS PICTURE MADE", Betty Sue Jasper wrote with this photograph Sunday morning. "He gave me a lot of different poses on different plants," and sent the Wikipedia address for Praying Mantis Praying Mantis, so named, according to Wikipedia, for its praying stance. Betty Sue Jasper, must have been considering that aspect of the creature's habit, when she wrote, "Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday and remember to say a prayer today and every day!" Adair County Wildlife: In preyerful mode

2008-06-29 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings Road, Adair County, KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne.
IT MUST HAVE TAKEN THE PATIENCE of A NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHER but Shamarie Claiborne caught this praying mantis in a supplicant stance, down on its knees, appearing to be praying (but really, preying). She wrote, "I never see these guy's anymore. Caught him in Kevin's new shop tonight. He was looking straight at me in a couple of them. I just really love these little guys. They make me think of God. I love 'The Holler.'" A praying mantis is sometimes called "Preyng Mantis," a term defined in linguistics as an "Eggcorn" according to Wikipedia. The article on the insects in Wikipedia is absolutely fascinating. To see more Shamarie Claiborne photos, enter her name in the searchbox. Pad poured for new AC fueling station

2008-07-26 - Appleby Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The Pad is Poured for the new Adair County Fueling Station. The site is scene from the Columbia Western Bypass. The road is Appleby Drive, but the county will be building a new road to access the fueling station because the Department of Corrections does not want additional traffic by the maximum security Adair Youth Development Center. To the right of the pad, out of frame, is the Green River Animal Shelter. The water tower, upper right, is Summit Manor on Bomar Heights. County, city, and other government vehicles will be able to obtain fuel with special credit cards with an appoximately 25 cents per gallon savings, according to a report given Adair Fiscal Court at its July meeting.
