Scenic Cumberland Co. KY: Alpine Motel, suspended

2008-07-25 - Burkesville, KY - Photo By Pen.
The FAMOUS ALPINE MOTEL situated high on Big Hill Mountain in Burkesville, KY, appears to be suspended by utilitiy lines in the photo above. The motel lends a Gatlinburg, TN, look to the area, a comparison readily welcome by Cumberland County promoters, who say it is "more better" than the Tennessee attraction. It is closer for most ColumbiaMagazine.com readers, and many prefer the dramatic scenery in Cumberland County, not to mention the tremendous savings in gasoline by visiting Cumberland County and its capital, Burkesville, KY, "The Best Kept Secret in Kentucky." Scenic Adair Co., KY: Deer on Johnson Schoolhouse RD

2008-07-25 - Gadberry/Fairplay area, District 3, Adair Co., KY - Photo By Pen.
JUST OFF SCENIC KY HIGHWAY 24 is another scenic byway, Johnson Schoolhouse Road, a slow byway with surprises around every turn as it loops from what was the central business district of Gadberry on Butterp'int Ridge to New Zion Church, closer to Fairplay. On a Sunday morning drive, a young deer darted for the woods on the other side of the road at this rise in the road near Daryl Loy's dairy farm. A Friday, July 25, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo.

After July 22, 2008 storm: Clyde Hutchison surveys damage

2008-07-25 - Keen-Wilson Road, Joppa/Zion side of the Creek, Adair Co., KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne. CLYDE HUTCHISON was surveying the wind damage to his corn crop when photographer Shamarie Claiborne was commuting along her shortcut from The Holler to kinfolks in Glens Fork when she spotted Clyde Hutchison surveying the storm damage to his sweet corn. "He was upset since thiswas his best looking garden in years," she writes with the picture, "But he then gave me some good tomatoes--of course they had no damage and were delicious!" 2008-07-25 - Hudson ST., Columbia, KY - Photo By Pen.
It's Hudson Street in foreground, the distant road is Greensburg ST, taken in the early morning. Udell Shirley's fruit market is the long gray building in the center of the photo. Other prominent features are Coomer's Building Supply, the familiar red building in the right and, beyond that, part of the Franklin estate with the Shepherd Shop, on Greensburg Street appearing much closer than it reallly is. The blue roof in the middle left is part of the Don Franklin Ford complex. A Today, July 25, 2008 Picture Album photo

Tale of two+ gardens: Russell Guy Perkins vs. the others

2008-07-25 - Somewhere in North Columiba, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
CHAMPEEN GARDENER RUSSELL GUY PERKINS says that raising world class tomatoes is no big feat, but not everybody gets the hang of it. Above, he's holding a cull old fashioned yellow tomato from his garden in his right hand, and, in his left, he jokes, is an old fashioned red tomato from either the garden of renown gardeners Marshall Barnett or A.L. Sinclair, he can't remember which. Perkins said the old fashioned yellow is a cull not because of of the small skin imperfection--that can be surgically removed before plating--but because of its small size."Some gardeners can only raise one kind of tomato," he notes. "I see more of a challenge in growing many varieties." Besides old fashioned yellows and reds, he has Brandywines, Jerusalems, pink striped, Australian, cherry, and black, a dark red tomato. He feeds several families from the garden, including, he said, kinfolk Lynn McLean, now a gardenless townie over in Columbia, and Gale Pickett, up in Shepherdsville, as well as "most of the REA over in Campbellsville." It's a good garden this year, and he's already eating squash, cucumbers, sweet corn, and zuchinni, with green beans on the way. A Today, Friday, July 25, 2008 Picture Album photo
