Larry Smith postcardfrom the past: Armistice Day Parade

2008-07-24 - Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo From the Larry Smith files.
LARRY SMITH, news anchor at WHVE the WAVE FM 92.7 and South Central Kentucky historian, sent this postcard from the past, an Armistice Day Parade photo taken on Main Street in Campbellsville in 1939. Armistice Day used to be celebrated on November 11 each year to commemorate the symbolic end of World War I. Today, we have celebrated it as Veterans Day since 1954. Look closely, you may see someone you know. To see more Larry Smith photos, photos from the past, and old postcards, enter his name in the searchbox. Scenic Russell Co., KY: Jamestown Boat Dock

2008-07-24 - Lake Cumberland, Russell Co. KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
ONE OF THE PRETTIEST PLACES IN THE WORLD despite the lower lake levels, is the harbor at Jamestown Boat Dock. From the look of lake traffic the day this photo was taken, one would never think tourism is down. The view is across the Jamestown Boat Dock toward Lure Lodge. On the right, across the lake, is the State Boat Dock, yards across the lake by boat, but as much as 30 minutes by motorcycle.A Today, July 24, 2008 Today's Picture Album Photo

Gas Price problem solved! Bike built for a family

2008-07-24 - Hudson ST, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The LATE HASKIN COOMER bought this bicycle from a Columbia man who built it. It is now owned by his grandson, Steve Coomer, right, above with Dylan Collins. Coomer doesn't know whether the builder used a kit to connect the two 10-speed bikes, or if he created the mechanical elements himself. The bikes have a special buckboard for a passenger (or passengers, if they are smaller) in the center, and there's a large wooden luggage carrier, too. Unlike a tandem, which allows almost unchallenged control by the front rider, this side-by-side allows riders to shift gears on their own bike independently, which shouldn't be too much of a problem, but both riders have front and rear caliper brakes which also work indenpendently. The bike has one wheel which needs truing; it wobbles badly now, but otherwise it is pretty much road worthy. It can be bought, Steve Coomer said, for $200, or, at today's prices, about the cost of 50 gallons of gasoline, enough for about 1,000 miles. This People Powered Vehicle snickers past gasoline pumps.
