Dean Roach reports of Silver Sunday money in action Money raised by Peggy Ellis Teen Girls Class at Columbia church of Christ, on Sunday, July 13, 2008, is being put to glorious use in Parmaribo, Suriname With photo, link to earlier story By Dean Roach, Minister, Columbia church of Christ Silver Sunday was held by the girls of the Columbia church of Christ. The girls collected some $1500 to purchase food for Stitching Kinderhuis Orphanage in Paramaribo, Suriname. Now this sounds like a simple task, but nothing is easy here. Stateside we could go to one store to purchase all the items, but here not so. First we went to a regular grocery store to buy the smaller items. Then it was off to the rice company where we had the choice between six different qualities of rice and we left with nearly a half a ton. We then had to go elsewhere for the remaining staples. We bought only main staples: rice, sugar, flour, potatoes, garlic, onions, cooking oil and the like such. The girls also collected hair ribbons, barrettes, scrunches, combs, brushes, mirrors and for the boys matchbox cars. Fruit of the Loom gave us tee shirts for the children. One of the ladies, Leona Koyte from Guyana, wrote the children's names on the shirts in calligraphy. To say the least, they were very happy. I'm very proud of our young girls' class and Peggy Ellis, their teacher. I will be traveling home on Monday and look forward to being in Adair County once again.
