Ty Rogers NCAA play takes ESPY Award for best finish ColumbiaMagazine.com SPORTS Ty Rogers' game-winning three In NCAA tournament takes ESPY Award, first ever for Western Kentucky University By Chris Glowacki Ty Rogers' game-winning three-point field goal at the buzzer in overtime that lifted the Western Kentucky University basketball program to an opening-round NCAA Tournament victory in March over then-No. 14 Drake won the ESPY Award for Best Finish at the annual awards show Wednesday night at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. The play, which resulted in a 101-99 win over the Bulldogs--the school's first in the event since 1995--allowed the Hilltoppers to advance to the second round to take on San Diego. They would go on to defeat the Toreros 72-63 to earn WKU's first trip to the Sweet 16 since the 1993 tournament. The shot--which earned WKU its first-ever ESPY--beat out three other outstanding sports finishes from the past year. Other candidates for the award were the final lap of 2007 Pepsi 400, the overtime periods of game one of this spring's Western Conference first-round NBA playoff series between the San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns, and the end of the Pittsburgh Penguins' triple-overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings in game five of the NHL's Stanley Cup finals in June. The ESPY Awards, in its 16th year, honor the best in sports and celebrates the best sports stories of the year. The award show will air on ESPN on Sunday, July 20, 2008, at 8:00pmCT.
