Black widow momma with egg sac at Somerset

2008-07-17 - Somerset, KY - Photo By Kenny Akin.
BLACK WIDOW SPIDER: "These aren't in short supply in Somerset, either. This one was found guarding her eggsac under a flower pot a couple of days ago," writes photographer Kenny Akin from Somerset KY, this morning, Thursday, July 18, 2008, at 5:17amCT. "I'm not sorry to say that this arachnid met her demise shortly after the photo was taken. I seem to find these things quite frequently in both Somerset and Columbia." He added, "The word 'Canada' in the photo is just what was printed on the bottom of a plastic flower pot." According to the Wikipedia Black Widow entry, the female spider gets a bad rap when it comes to mariticide; they only occasionally enjoy a meal of their husband after copulation. Widow spiders account for more bites than any other spider, world wide. Their venom is more potent than that of a rattlesnake or cobra, but the much smaller spider usually delivers a non-lethal dose to humans with a single bite.
