2008-07-15 - KY East 80, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The PAVING IS COMPLETE:
The approaches to the Road Eighty Bridge are as smooth as a counter top. The new bridge still needs safety striping and inspections by the Kentucky Department of Highways. Visiting Haven Hill Cemetery

2008-07-15 - Conover Family Cemetery, Haven Hill, Liberty Road, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
SEARCHING FOR A FRIEND'S GRAVESITE. Geneva Triplett Loy, Russell Springs, KY, sister Eloise Triplett Riddle and Eloise' husband Jim Riddle, Red Key, Indiana, were searching Haven Hill Cemetery, Liberty Road, for the graves of two deceased friends recently. They standing by a historic marker, the gravesite of Marvin Conover, the first Adair County lawmen killed in the line of duty. This section of the cemetery is along the ridgeline between Liberty Road and Bull Run. The standard behind them is the flagstaff in the main cemetery, and Columbia is in the distant background. The sisters are the daughters of the late Les and Emma Triplett. The Triplett childhood home was located across Jamestown Street from the Susan Miller land, then a delightful horse pasture and now the site of Columbia church of Christ. Jim Riddle is originally from Cumberland County, but graduted from Columbia High School in 1948. He had a career as an employee of Ball State University before retiring to Garlin, KY, for three years. He and Eloise returned to Red Key, IN to be closer to children and grandchildren. (ADV) Remembering a great Russell County restaurant

2008-07-15 - Jamestown Boat Dock - Photo By Ed Waggener.
NOW IT IS A SPIFFED UP OFFICE BUILDING but there was a time when this building was the site of some of the best home cooked restaurant food in the South, before the Webb Bros. took over Jamestown Boat Dock. Thousands can remember enjoying long leisurely meals, with cooked to order fried chicken, catfish, great steaks, with a long selection of real home cooked vegetables and fresh cut salads, and the friendliest service imaginable, all at unbelievably low prices. Is there any place like it on Lake Cumberland today? If you remember more about the place, or have a photo to share, please send to ColumbiaMagazine.com using one of the Contact/Submit buttons Clicking Read More assesses the "Today, Monday, July 15 2008," feature and the July 15, 2008, Today's Picture Album.

Float trip from Burkesville, KY: The Castle on the Cumberland

2008-07-15 - Eddyville, Lyon Co. KY - Photo By Adventurer Chris Bennett.
THE CASTLE ON THE CUMBERLAND: "This is one Kentucky landmark I hope to keep my distance from," Adair County adventurer Chris Bennett writes of this photo he took midmorning, last year on June 6, 2007, on a trip down the Cumberland River from Burkesville, KY. "It is Kentucky State Penitentiary in Lyon County near Eddyville. It was built in the 1880s by Italian stone masons on the banks of the Cumberland River. It is now on the banks of Lake Barkley. Eddyville got its name from the eddies in the Cumberland River that prevented large steam ships from traveling up stream from the Ohio river. Cargo, and passengers would have to enter smaller steam ships to complete the journey to Clarksville, Nashville, TN, and Burkesville, Rowena, Creelsboro, or Burnside, KY" Clicking Read More assesses the "Today, Monday, July 15 2008," feature and the July 15, 2008, Today's Picture Album.

Perfect Tomato Sandwich

2008-07-15 - Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
IF FRIED GREEN TOMATOES would be the first meal you'd want inside the pearly gates, this would make a perfect last supper. It's the center slice of a John Woloezko, Putman-in-Adair County grown, first harvest tomato that overtops a slice of white bread toasted in olive oil, and garnished with sea salt and basil. Better than prime rib at Hasenour's ever was. Today's Picture Album photo
