Melissa Taylor Photo essay: Liz & Kate get haircuts and more

Melissa Taylor made an important trip taking pictures in the area from Milltown to Portland. Along the way, she happened on a farm operation not seen enough these days, two mules get trims.

Three photos chronicle that event. Along the way, there were more photos. They're collected below in a delightful photo essay, which is likely to inspire a day trip from Columbia.

NEW DO's for PAIR OF BEAUTIES:
"Johnnie Janes of the Portland community is giving mules Liz & Kate a nice trim while some of his family members stood in the background telling stories of some of his less than ideal experiences working team mules. One story involved several kicks to the shin by two different mules!," writes photographer Melissa Taylor in this in progress photo she took on a barns-to-shoot trip with her mother piloting her car, and which took her to some great spots in western Adair County, and ending in Gradyville. Reminder of bygone days

2008-07-13 - Adair County, KY - Photo By Melissa Taylor.
"A cool drink of water in the middle of a tobacco patch. All that is missing is a bologna sandwich!," writes photographer Melissa Taylor after finding this reminder of a now rare, but very commonplace rural scene in Adair County 60 years ago, before the days of rural waterification. Flickr. (When the photo first arrived, in a packet with "The Gifts of Gradyville" essay, the first notion was that it was the well which once was the Gradyville Water Department: the town well across Main Street in Old Gradyville from Hob Walker's store; that well, unfortunately, is long gone, but Gradyville is undergoing a bit of a renaissance, as memories of it's greatness as a place for kids is being re-examined.
