Bridge over Crocus Creek at Bakerton

2008-07-11 - Bakerton, Cumberland Co., KY - Photo By Chrls Bennett. "This is a photo taken from my boat on the Cumberland River in June 2007, Last June I traveled down the Cumberland River from Winfreys Ferry, to just above the Mississippi River. (a trip of about 600 miles by the way the rivers run.) Thanks!" Chris Bennett of Columbia wrote. Larry Smith Pictures from the Past:
Lower Main St, Campbellsville

2008-07-12 - Campbellsville, KY - Photo From the collection of Larry Smith.
Larry Smith, WHVE the Wave 92.7 FM radio anchor and South Central Kentucky historian, sent this photo of lower Main Street in days when the street was sensibly cooled naturally by shade trees. It was in the days before city fathers forgot all rationality and blacktopped sidewalk to sidewalk to create urban heat islands where they didn't have to be, and to create storm runoff and floods. One wonders how tourists would be kept out of downtowns in South Central Kentucky if they still had this inviting look, as Greensburg, Hodgenville, and Jamestown, nearby, are recapturing. Shamarie: Portrait of a dragonfly in The Holler

2008-07-12 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings RD, Columbia, KY - Photo By Shamarie Claiborne.
Shamarie Claiborne caught this guy on his antenna on her truck yesterday morning. "I thought it was cool," she writes. Dragonflies are considered valuable predators, and eat a huge number of mosquitoes which might otherwise harass the peaceful inhabitants of The Holler. However, they don't limit their appetites to bad bugs. They also enjoy an occasional honeybee, and treat themselves to butterflies from time to time, though it would be hoped they do so with the same remorse a backslidden vegan feels when gluttonizing a juicy prime rib. Dragonflies are fun to watch, too. The race was helicoptering eons befor Igor Sikorsky ever thought of his contraption. Flickr. Road Eighty Bridge, day 285, Friday evening, July 11, 2008

2008-07-12 - Russell Creek, E. KY 80, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The Paint Norman Ratliff applied to the side rails is dry, the bridge floor is swept clean. Only blacktopping by Gaddie Shamrock is needed on top of the roadway to let happy Western Adair Countians re-unite easily via Heritage route Road Eighty to Ozark, Sano, White Oak and on into the County. The photo doesn't do justice to the size of the bridge, which would make a real nice dance floor, as in the familiar old country song "Sur le pont, Russell Creeque, l'on y danse, l'on y danse." Good crop of pole beans at Glens Fork

2008-07-12 - Old Glens Fork Rd., Glens Fork, District 3, Adair County, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
BILLY FLETCHER'S FAMILY is already enjoying green beans from the garden at his farm on Old Glens Fork Road, Glens Fork, and the tasseled sweet corn is high over his head. Fletcher raises a one-tenth acre vegetable garden behind his home on a beautiful suite of farms stretching from KY 768 almost to Yellowhammer Road. Besides green beans and corn, he has cucumbers, peas, butterbeans, tomatoes, hill onions and cabbage, though he doesn't like to talk about cabbage. It's the only part of the crop which failed this year. Most crops around Glens Fork are doing exceptionally well this year. Some of the prettiest burley tobacco in the county can be seen along KY 55, particularly the big crop on the Phillip and Alice Hadley Farm.
