Feedback: Reader spots Sourwood walking stick PHOTO Frank Dickerson's keen eye spots old classmate Robert Coffey's sourwood walking stick in CM photo, and the sight brings back memories of their Barnetts Creek Days, when "when the world was still quite new and entertainment was mostly homemade" To ColumbiaMagazine.com I was very pleased to see my former Barnetts Creek school mate Robert Coffey, in this photo and to notice the walking stick he is holding. The walking stick looks like the ones we used to make from "Sourwood" saplings. The young saplings grew very straight and we would carve geometric and other designs in the bark, strip the bark away and expose the wood over fire to char the design into the wood. Afterwards we peeled off the remaining bark to reveal the well defined designs. Robert's stick looks very much like the ones we used to make back in the 40s, when the world was still quite new and entertainment was mostly homemade. And we cherish the memories!
