Larry Smith Photo from the Past: Taylor Co. Federal Savings

2008-07-01 - Main Street, Campbellsville, KY - Photo From Larry Smith collection.
Larry Smith, news anchor at The WAVE, FM 92.7, Southern Kentucky historian, and photo collector, pulled this gem from his archives. and wrote, "An old bank on Main Street." He doesn't identify the man in the Campbellsville, KY photo, but probably someone will. From presence of the newer 1951 Ford on the right, and the gentleman's elegant (by today's standards) attire, it was likely 1951, when the Cold War between Campbellsville and Columbia could get really hot on basketball nights at Columbia, Breeding and Knifley High Schools. There's some financial DNA of Taylor County Federal Savings & Loan still extant in what is today Community Trust Bank (Russell Road in Columbia). Taylor County Federal Savings & Loan made a huge difference in housing in those years. Many homes in Columbia, Campbellsville, and Greensburg were made possible by their then innovative mortgages, which required small down payments and carried low interest and reasonable payments over 15, 20, and 30 years. A large number of the homes were financed by Taylor Co. Federal S&L in what was then Jack Young's pasture on Fairground St, and is now the Young Addition of Columbia. -Ed Waggener. Guns of Ft. Donelson, overlooking Cumberland River

2008-07-01 - Ft. Donelson, Dover, TN - Photo By Chris Bennett. CHRIS BENNETT, local electrician, part time historian, and owner and guitar salesman at Columbia Music Center, took this wonderful historic travel picture in June 2007, and writes: "Although the guns of Fort Donelson have been silent for 146 years, they are still protecting the western Cumberland River. In 1862 an unknown Brigadier General named Ulysses S Grant led an attack on Fort Donelson located on the Kentucky-Tennessee border to our west. This victory over the Southern army, started Grant on a path that made him the Supreme Union Commander in 1864 and the president of the United States in 1868. (It all started on our Cumberland River)." Ft. Donelson is located 169 miles SW of Columbia Music Center, 503 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY. It is at 174 National Cemetery Drive, Dover, Stewart County, TN. The trip is beautiful any time of the year, but the beautiful farms of Logan and Trigg Counties are fabulous in June and July. The late Columbia Mayor Coy Downey called it the most beautiful land outside Adair County he'd ever seen.Clicking Read More Accesses the "Today, Tues., July 1, 2008" feature with the July 1, 2008 Today's Picture Album.

Adair Justice Center: Day 1 steel work, July 1, 2008

2008-07-01 - Merchant & Campbellsville Streets, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
STEEL WORK BEGAN this morning, Tuesday, July 1, 2008, on the Adair Justice Center, providing one of the best free shows in town at 201 Campbellsville Street. The giant crane towers over the steel girders already in place. The five uprights in place at noon give an indication of what will be seen and what will be blocked out following completion of the 35,000 s.f. court house. The famous Blue Barn, which inspired Grover Gilpin's grandfather to invent the Wal-Mart concept long before Sam Walton happened on the idea, and which now dominates the skyline, will be mostly obscured. Lucky little girl has Papa Jim with Garlin, KY training

2008-07-01 - Bowling Green, KY - Photo By Annette Richards.
Four year old Audrey LeeAnn is very lucky that her Papa Jim grew up in Garlin, KY, at a time when kids made their own toys and that Papa Jim's father Demaree Richards was a mighty handy craftsman who taught him a lot of the trade. Papa Jim constructed a Garlin standards tire swing in his own Bowling Green backyard and it is proving as popular with today's kids as it did in 1940s Adair County.
